  TIMOTHY YOUNG - piano

Described by critics as a ‘rare talent’, pianist Timothy Young has been acclaimed for his, ‘highly individual and imaginative interpretations’ and his ability to produce ‘veritable orchestral palettes of sound through his extensive exploration of pianistic colour’.

Currently the Resident Pianist at the Australian National Academy of Music, Timothy enjoys a reputation as one of Australia’s leading collaborative artists. Amongst others he has performed in recital with, Alexander Baillie, Howard Penny, Wanda Wilkomirska, Daniel Kossov, Tanya Prochazka, Peter Exton, William Hennessy, Philippe Muller, Michael Goldschlager, Oleh Krysa, Rudolf Koelman, Suren Bagratuni, Patricia Pollett, Caroline Henbest, Brett Dean, Paul Neubauer, John Harle, Paul Rozcek, John Harding, Marco Lazzara, Csaba Erdélyi, Howard Davis, Ma Xiaohui, Mats Lidström , Alexander Ivashkin , Geoffrey Collins, Hansjorg Schellenberger, the Griffith Trio, the Australia Ensemble and is a founding member of Ensemble Liaison.

Timothy received his Bachelor of Music (Honours Performance) at the University of Melbourne with first class honours and as top performance student in each year of the course. He then continued his studies in Europe, receiving his Diploma with a rarely awarded distinction from the Ministry of Education and as dux of his year at the Nicolò Paganini Conservatorium in Genova, Italy. For nearly a decade Timothy Young appeared widely in Italy and other European centres, performing as a soloist, collaborative pianist and chamber musician in contemporary as well as mainstream repertoire. He performed works by Luciano Berio in the composer’s presence, was a member of the contemporary Orfeo and Aulodia ensembles in Italy and has performed regularly in numerous music festivals including Chiavari, Bordighera, Ravello, the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, ANAM Autumn Music Festival, Queensland Biennial Festival of Music, the Melbourne International Arts Festival, Port Fairy (Victoria), Music in the Round at  Monash University, the Utzon Room music series at the Sydney Opera House and the Perth Concert Hall Summer Series.

Recipient of numerous scholarships and awards, Timothy is also a major prize winner of national and international piano and chamber music competitions, including the Sanremo Classico, Premio Venezia and outright first prize-winner of the Premio Kawai- Tortona, the Palma d’Oro- Finale Ligure and in trio the 1st Chamber Music Competition of Liguria, Italy. He also featured on the selected solo highlights CD of the 1996 Sydney International Piano Competition.

Timothy has been an assistant teacher to Professor Lidia Baldecchi Arcuri at the Nicolò Paganini Conservatorium, a guest lecturer at Melbourne University- Faculty of Music, the Victorian College of the Arts, Griffith University- Brisbane and has taught and lectured at the Australian Institute of Music- Sydney. Together with Prof. Baldecchi Arcuri, he has presented seminars on pianistic performance for the Australian Music Teachers Association. He is also active as a jury member of both national and international piano and chamber music competitions. Timothy has recorded for the RAI in Italy and in Australia for 2MBS, 3MBS and ABC-Classic FM, where he has also developed and presented concerts dedicated to Australian Composers.
